Week 12 – you did it!

Welcome to Week 12 and THANK YOU for coming on this journey with me. I’m jumping for joy right now. You did it!

Your skin, body, and brain are all thanking you for undertaking an epic journey to healthier, more fearless skin. Nothing good in life comes for free so we applaud and salute your commitment.

Over the coming weeks, we encourage you to stay skin smart, which means keeping up the routine you’ve fostered and being aware of the environmental damage that can occur when you’re out in the sun, or even when it’s cloudy.

Too much sun is one of the worst offenders when it comes to premature aging of our skin and loss of structural integrity. Yet the sun can be so tempting! That’s because sunlight makes us feel good by increasing feel-good endorphins and boosting the hormone leptin, which helps us to burn fat. The sun also keeps us warm and helps us regulate our sleep patterns. Plus, we get about 75% of our Vitamin D from it – vital for calcium absorption, bone development and the production of melanin in our skin.

This all creates a powerful antioxidant system.  However, too much time outside also damages the upper layers of our skin, changing the structure of our collagen and elastin fibres. This results in the skin drooping and wrinkling, as well as causing skin abnormalities, such as cancers.

As with using our products, we encourage you to take a less is more approach. Spend time outside early in the morning and late in the afternoon and avoid the mid-day sun.

Top three takeaways on sunscreen:

  1. Know why mineral sunscreen is better than chemical sunscreen.

Mineral and chemical sunscreens are made up of two entirely different formulas and react with the body in a variety of ways. Chemical sunscreens will absorb the sun’s rays before turning them into heat, which then disperses into the air. Their ingredients are absorbed into the dermal layer, causing damage before the protective element starts to work.

As well as this questionable ability to protect our skin, chemical sunscreen ingredients can disrupt your hormonal function, which is not ideal especially if you are applying sunscreen to children’s skin. A healthy alternative is mineral sunscreen, which instead contains ingredients such as titanium oxide or zinc oxide. These act as a mirror to reflect the sun’s rays.

Make sure you look for the ‘non-nano’ denomination on the product: This means that the titanium or zinc particles are too large to be absorbed into the skin, so they sit on top, forming a barrier that prevent UVA and UVB rays from entering.

  1. Get clued up on SPF numbers and apply your sunscreen often.

Many people believe that the higher the SPF the safer you are, but as DermNet New Zealand states, SPF 15 filters out 93%  of UVB Rays, whereas SPF 30 filters out only 97% of them. For example, if it only takes 10 minutes for your skin to get burned, then SPF15 multiplies that amount of time by a factor of 15, which means that you could go 150 minutes before burning. Unfortunately, those numbers show that applying SPF 30 does not mean that you double the time.

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor in regard to UVB rays. Applying sunscreen often is the best way to protect your skin from environmental damage. It is also important when deciding on what SPF to choose that you take into consideration the color of your skin, your sensitivity to the sun, your family history and how direct your exposure will be in the sun.

  1. Learn the UV alphabet.

As well as understanding SPF numbers, it’s important to get a handle on what ultraviolet (UV) rays are. UV rays carry radiation and cause a chemical reaction in the body. UVB are rays that burn the skin’s superficial layers. Meanwhile, UVA are rays that penetrate the deeper layers of the skin causing premature aging. Broad-spectrum sunscreens protect your skin from UVA and UVB light.

Remember, whenever you go outside into the sunshine or even if it’s a little cloudy, the best way to protect your skin from aging is to use a mineral sunscreen with an SPF that is adequate enough for your exposure.

Hot, cold or a mixture, there is no hard and fast rule to a good bountiful bowl but the one thing it must be is packed to the brim with healthy ingredients so it has a full, rounded appearance.

Typically your bowl should look like a rainbow, seasoned to your liking and power-packed with filling nutrients and vitamins that aid weight loss and overall health and wellbeing. Below is a glossary list of 20 great ingredients for your bountiful bowls that will help you repair and care for your skin.

Salmon, avocado, quinoa, pumpkin & sunflower seeds, lemon, honey, almonds, olive oil & flax seed oil, broccoli, apple cider vinegar, yogurt, beetroot, berries, kumara, tomato, red or yellow peppers, chickpeas & lentils, eggs, Parmesan, Feta, Neufchatel cheese.

Bees always see the sun.

Bees use the position of the sun to navigate and there is evidence of their sensitivity to the earth’s magnetic field. Bees’ eyes are sensitive to polarized light, which penetrates through even thick  clouds, so bees can ‘see’ the sun even in poor weather.

Step 1:

Remove Gentle Facial Cleanser – Rich in Manuka Honey & Avocado Oil

When it comes to our Remove Gentle Facial Cleanser, a little goes a long way.

  • Simply squeeze out a bit the size of an almond, add a drop or two of warm water.
  • Warm by rubbing the cleanser in your hands.
  • Apply cleanser to the face neck and decollete. (safe to use around the eye & lip area)
  • Gently massage the cleanser around the area being cleansed.
  • Use a clean warm flannel to compress the skin and then remove the cleanser.
  • I recommend repeating the above step, if you’ve been wearing make-up. 

Mindful removal

I sometimes also add a little lemon juice or lemon oil to my warm water. If you have a busy life, then those couple of minutes of mindfulness practicing ‘slow beauty’ really makes a difference to your life. 

Step 2:

Prepare Spray On Brightening Lotion (toner) HERO PRODUCT –  Rich in Manuka Honey & Kiwifruit – Antibacterial

  • Either spray directly onto your face or spray a little into clean hands.
  •  Gently pat into your face, neck, decollete, avoiding the eye area. 
  • Leave the skin to dry and then apply your favorite moisturizer.

Hydrate well

Our Prepare Brightening Spray On Lotion (toner) helps to tone, tighten and even out the skin.

If you have very dry skin on your arms and legs, then you can use the brightening lotion to spray, rub in and feel soft and hydrated.

Step 3:

AM Day Serum – Rich in Manuka Honey Moisturizer & Ponga Fern Seed (Apply after cleansing and toning).  You only need a small amount as it will spread easily and will deliciously soak into your skin

  • Dot the moisturizer over the area to be treated.
  • As it warms to your skin, gently rub in.

PM Night Cream – Rich in Manuka Honey and Bee Venom Moisturizer (Apply after cleansing and toning).  This is a thick moisturizer designed for night-time replenishment.

  • Dot, night cream on your face, neck and decollete.
  • As it warms to your skin gently massage in, allowing your skin to repair and regenerate whilst you sleep.

Our skin is the largest organ in our body, performing many vital tasks; it provides a barrier to infection, pathogenic threats and harmful pollution. Despite this, our skin nutrition can often be overlooked and our good intentions to cleanse and fight bad bacteria can go amiss.

Our skin is a microclimate of ‘good bacteria’ necessary to regulate our skin, fight infection and retain moisture.  However, with the increasing use of synthetics, preservatives, parabens and sulphates in traditional skincare, our skin’s natural healing and pH balancing abilities can be dramatically decreased, as good bacteria are stripped, and moisture levels depleted.
