Speaking of hearts, the Valentine’s day is quickly approaching. I thought now would be a good time to reflect on the story of the day’s origin, and why we’re celebrating love. But most importantly, I wanted to share some ideas on ‘HEART’y sustainable Valentine’s day gift ideas.

One of many stories

One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers, he outlawed marriage for young men. However, the priest continued to observe marriages in secret. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. While this sounds rather dramatic, it does show the lengths that we will go for love, and thus, the day celebrating love began!

Gift Ideas

I am someone who adores celebrating holidays, and Valentine’s Day is no exception. Sharing the love comes naturally to me but buying into the commercial aspect of the holiday and creating unnecessary waste gives me eco-anxiety. So, I put on my thinking cap and with the help of my very creative daughters, we have dreamed up some sustainable Valentine’s Day gift options. These can help you celebrate love in an eco-friendly and purposeful way.

This Valentines Day, take some time to smell the roses.

Flowers

When we think of Valentine’s Day, we think of long-stemmed red roses. But have you ever spared a thought about where these blooms come from? For those living in colder climates, roses are flown in from flower growing hotspots such as Australia, Kenya and Colombia. This creates unnecessary carbon emissions which are so easily avoided! This year, how about swapping these carbon-intensive flowers for a potted native tree or plant? or simply picking homegrown flowers and presenting them with a homemade card for a thoughtful switch-up which is sure to win brownie points!

Au Natural products

Au Natural’s refillable tins and eco pouches are the perfect pair. They’re a practical yet thoughtful gift to boost biomes while sharing the love. Here at Au Natural, our philosophy is to strengthen the barrier of our skin so that nature can use its own defence system to fight environmental damage. My husband and I both use our REMOVE – Gentle Facial Cleanser, and the eco pouch refill helps with minimising our carbon footprints. Plus, it means we both have biome-positive skin!

Chocolates

Try thinking outside the box Valentine’s Day, particularly when it comes to sweet treats. Rather than buying chocolates with excessive packaging, why not make your own or try a local, sustainably sourced brand with eco-packaging? Our favourite is Tom and Luke. Their goodies are so yummy – and they’re good for you! You could even get in the kitchen yourself and create your own sweet treats, incorporating healthy ingredients like Manuka honey and Au’s Hair.Skin.Nails. Collagen Powder.

We have 6 gift packs containing Tom and Luke’s healthy treats, Whittakers Chocolate and Au Natural clay masks to give away this Valentine’s Day. We have 3 to give away on our Instagram – click here, and 3 – to win on Facebook – click here so view each page for entry details. This competition ends Wed 17th Feb NZT so good luck!

Time

I think the gift of time is underestimated, and with lockdown this year, we’ve learnt to appreciate our local environment more than ever. For a Valentine’s treat that is sure to please, consider an adventure in nature with your nearest and dearest. Pack a picnic and head off to your local gardens or bike track for that real feel-good factor, while embracing your local environment and sharing quality time. You’ll create amazing memories you’ll cherish forever.

Some years ago, when I was working very long, hard hours in one of my clinics, my husband (who never came into the clinics) surprised me by popping into work mid-afternoon. He had organised with my staff that I could have the rest of the afternoon off and had arranged for his parents to fetch our kids from school. He arrived with two imported glossy magazines – a real treat in those days, as it was outside our budget and I would not have normally had time to read them. I spent the afternoon enjoying a long bubble bath reading the magazines, and after he had collected our children from his parents, we all had a picnic dinner together in our garden. I have never forgotten that Valentine’s Day, and I think it is testimony to the fact that thoughtful gifts and spending quality time with loved ones make for the best memories.

The COVID-19 pandemic has undoubtedly put stress on us all. This Valentine’s Day, here at Au Natural Skinfood, we’re celebrating our loved ones, whether they’re down the street, or on the other side of the world. What matters this 14th of February is being kind and sharing the love!
