Combating Climate Change #1: Eat (a little) less meat
If cows were a country, the ‘United Herds of Earth’ would be the planet’s third largest greenhouse gas emitter. Animal products, particularly beef and dairy, create the majority of food-related greenhouse gas emissions. And of the world’s total emissions, an astounding 26% is tied up with animal products and their supply chains.
Telling the person sitting next to you to stop eating steak is not a wise approach, for very obvious reasons. A better tactic is to start talking about the collective outcomes of our meat eating. In rich countries especially, more and more people are taking on flexitarian (or reducetarian) diets as a response to three core concerns: human health; environmental health; and animal welfare.
Human Health: A 2016 study led by Marco Springmann at the University of Oxford found that, globally, a transition to a well-balanced vegan or vegetarian diet could result, respectively, in 8.1 million and 7.3 million fewer deaths per year. Another study from the US, made up of over 500,000 participants, showed that men with the highest meat consumption were 27% more likely to die of cardiovascular disease than those who ate the least meat. For women, the risk was elevated by 50%. That’s a lot of badly blocked arteries.
Climate / Environmental Health: A 2018 study, again led by Marco Springmann at the University of Oxford, concluded that “GHG emissions cannot be sufficiently mitigated without dietary changes towards more plant-based diets”. It’s that simple, however, they also noted that “providing information without additional economic or environmental changes has a limited influence on behaviour.”
Animal Welfare: Over 50 billion farm animals are killed for meat every year. Need we say more?
While the experts are telling us that we ultimately need collective changes to change diets — including media and education campaigns, labelling and consumer information, economic incentives (such as taxation and subsidies), school and workplace approaches and even direct restriction and mandates — as we all know, it starts with you the individual. Simply talking about the above impacts can help get the collective ball rolling. So can becoming a flexitarian or a Monday-only non-meat eater. So can eating impossible burgers or other plant-based alternatives like Tofu. So can signing up to the “Planetary Health Diet“, recommended by 37 scientists as part of the EAT-Lancet commission.
