Face Moisturiser vs. Face Serum
Confusing isn’t it! As if there are not enough decisions to make in life. After years and years of formulating and selling cosmetics, even I find it tricky at times identifying what is a face serum and what is a face moisturiser. At different times of our life and indeed seasonally we sometimes need a moisturiser focused on what our skin actually needs. Identifying the problem and then doing your homework is the key to finding the right moisturiser for your skin.
Face Serums: Tend to be lightweight, smaller molecular structure with a higher concentration of active ingredients that can penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin. Often they absorb quickly into the skin allowing the active ingredients/antioxidants to combat free radical damage, skin pigmentation, ageing, acne and scarring by delivering nutrients and vitamins right into the skins cells. Serums tend to leave out “sealing” ingredients such as mineral oils, shea butter and natural moisturisers used to keep water from evaporating from the skin.
Face Moisturisers: Normally a lotion or a crème containing hydrating emollients that forms a physical barrier to help skin stay hydrated and feel comfortable. Moisturisers have a larger molecular structure than serums, so they do not penetrate into the epidermis. They are designed to seal the skin and lock in moisture and nutrients.
What you use on your skin often comes down to personal choice and how you like your skin to feel, having options and being able to layer your products is important as this lets you stay with the brand that you love but lets you change with your skin and the seasons. A light serum works hard to repair your skin cells and combat free radicles whilst a moisturiser acts to prevent the evaporation of moisture and provides a physical barrier to protect the skin from environmental damage. Serums can be used alone by people with naturally oilier skin, or under a moisturizer to help protect the hydration levels in normal to dry skin. During the winter months, it’s a good idea to use a moisturizer over your serum for extra hydration, to help your skin cope with changing temperature and drying winds.
At Au Natural Skinfood we have formulated a very simple range, with a low pH, our essential range has one key ingredient, Active 16+ Manuka Honey which contains an enzyme that enhances skin cell renewal, promoting collagen production. High levels of essential fatty acids along with vitamins, minerals and amino acids provide nutrition for renewing and repair skin cells. Our independent scientific research has shown that Active 16+ Manuka Honey enhances skin cell renewal by more than 80% compared to other natural skincare ingredients, making it a very powerful anti-aging ingredient. When combined with New Zealand natural botanicals, super fruit extracts, plant extracts, and botanical oils known for their anti-aging properties and high levels of antioxidant activity, we can protect the skin from the formation of free radicals and UV exposure that damage skin cells, causing aging. By strengthening the skins barrier function we are able to use our skins own natural defence system as nature intended to fight environmental damage.
